I suspect this is like Time's person of the year, but with a word? I would be remiss then, if I didn't point out that "carbon footprint" is two words, and thus immediately disqualified. Ugh, trying to show sarcasm online can be hard. Anyway, I'd have to disagree with you and go with "Troop Surge" if we are talking only American's, or "Middle East Conflict" if we are including the whole world. Perhaps it has to do with where I work and who I associate with, but conflict in the Middle East still dominated just about everything. Also, I'll give "sub-prime mortgage" a nod as honorable mention.

My local newspaper just did an article on what they thought was the word of the year, and they suggested "subprime" along with "green." "Troop surge" is good, too.

That's good, but I am thinking organic is the word of the year. everything from food to clothes to decorating??? who knew!
